The State Of Womens Sleep In America - 2022 Report Guide

People spend nearly one-third of their life in bed. A good night’s sleep is central to the overall health and well-being of human beings. However, while see the importance of sleep, according to a research of the Better Sleep Council, women are more sleep-deprived than men, have greater difficulty falling and staying asleep, and experience more daytime sleepiness.

On the occasion of World Sleep Day in 2022, SweetNight, which has been focusing on high-quality bedding since 2011, collaborates with Daily Yoga, a leading online yoga brand, to make a research of the state of women’s sleep behavior based on customer surveys and brand data research, increasing awareness around healthy sleep habits. 

2,000 surveys are fielded through emails and the social media activities between February 21 to March 8, among American female adults (age 18+). The report found that women struggle to sleep well. Only 20% women report that they are satisfied with their current sleep quality and 67% of women say they have been plagued by insomnia. Their awareness of healthy sleep habits are increasing.   

Facts about the State of Women’s Sleep

  • According to the survey, the average hours that women sleep per night is 6.8 hours. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society recommend that adults should sleep 7 or more hours at night to promote optimal health and well-being.
  • Only 20% women report that they are satisfied with their current sleep quality.

  • 16% women report that it takes more than1 hour to fall asleep.
  • Almost 40% of the participants noted that they wake up in the middle of the night. Plus-size respondents (52%) prone to wake up in the middle of the night than the average size sleepers (25%) and light-weight people (23%).

  • 17% participants report they feel excessively sleepy during daytime. 
  • Up to 40% respondents state they have purchased sleep aid products to help them to sleep better.
  • 95% of the respondents state they are affected by their sleep environment. Regarding the bedding, 81% of respondents say quality bedding is essential for good sleep, among which, nearly half of the participants state mattress affects their sleep quality most.

Healthy Sleep Habits for Your Better Rest

  • Stick to a regular sleeping and waking schedule - try to get into a regular sleep and wake cycle, especially on weekends. If possible, try to wake up naturally at a similar time each day.
  • In total, 62% of respondents stated that they used music to help them sleep. Some relaxing sounds, like rain sounds, ocean sounds, and fan sounds might help to relieve stress.
  • 81% of respondents say their sleep is affected by the improper choice of bedding, 45% of whom state mattress is the bedding that affect their sleep quality most. However, most of the sleepers still don’t know how to choose the right mattress firmness.  Firmness plays an important role in buying a new mattress, which presents the cushioning and pressure relief performance of the mattress in some extent. Each firmness scale has different characteristics and the targeted sleepers it's suitable for.
